Etymology of FRISBEE
The word "frisbee" is derived from the trademarked name of a popular flying disc toy known as the "Frisbee". However, the origin of the term goes back to the Frisbie Pie Company, which was established in the late 19th century in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The company made pie tins that became popularly used as flying discs. These tins had "Frisbie's Pies" imprinted on them.
In the 1940s and 1950s, students from Yale University discovered that these pie tins could be tossed and caught for fun. They began tossing them around, yelling "Frisbie"! to warn anyone nearby. Eventually, the term "frisbie" became associated with these pie tins used as flying objects.
In the 1950s, the Wham-O toy company introduced a plastic flying disc toy called the "Pluto Platter".
