Fen cricket refers to a particular species of cricket with the scientific name Conocephalus dorsalis, primarily found in areas characterized by fenland habitat. It belongs to the family Tettigoniidae and is commonly known as the long-winged conehead.
The fen cricket usually measures around 25-30 millimeters in length, with long antennae and a distinctive cone-shaped head that projects beyond their eyes. Their body is typically pale green or brown, enabling them to blend seamlessly with the surrounding vegetation. As an insect of the Orthoptera order, fen crickets possess two pairs of wings, although only the males have fully developed wings capable of flight.
This species is named after its preferred habitat, fens, which are waterlogged areas characterized by marshy grasslands and sedges. Fen crickets thrive in these wet environments, with their specialized body structure and adaptations allowing them to live comfortably amidst the tall grasses and reeds found in fens.
