The double bassoon, also known as the contrabassoon, is a musical instrument classified as a member of the woodwind family and is an expanded version of the bassoon. It is significantly larger and plays an octave lower than the regular bassoon, producing a deep, resonant, and rich tone.
The double bassoon is constructed with a long, curved metal tube that doubles back on itself, distinguishing it from the regular bassoon which has a straight shape. It possesses multiple long keys, discreet finger holes, and a complex mechanism to cover the entire range of notes. Its reed is larger and thicker than that of the bassoon, making it capable of producing low frequencies with more power and volume.
The instrument is played by placing the musician's mouth on the reed and blowing air through it while simultaneously pressing specific keys and producing different finger combinations to control the pitch. Due to its size and weight, the double bassoon usually rests on a floor peg or adjustable stand to provide stability during performance.
The double bassoon is predominantly featured in orchestral works and adds depth to the woodwind section by providing a strong, resonating bass foundation.
