Etymology of COMPUTER BUG
The word "bug" in the context of computers originated in the mid-20th century. Its etymology can be traced back to an incident that occurred in September 1947. Grace Hopper, an American computer scientist and programmer, was working on the Harvard Mark II computer when she encountered a malfunction. After investigating the cause, she found an actual insect, a moth, stuck in one of the circuits of the machine, causing the issue.
Hopper humorously annotated the investigation report with the words "First actual case of bug being found", and the term "bug" became popular among computer scientists to refer to any flaw or malfunction in a computer system. The notation Hopper made during that incident is now preserved at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History.
