COLURE Meaning and
Definition
-
Colure refers to either of the two great circles on a celestial sphere. These circles are formed by the intersection of the celestial sphere with the plane perpendicular to the plane of the earth's equator. The two primary colures are known as the prime vertical and the celestial equator, and they hold significant importance in astronomy and celestial navigation.
The prime vertical colure, also called the north-south colure, is the circle formed by the intersection of the celestial sphere with the plane perpendicular to the observer's meridian. It passes through the celestial poles and divides the celestial sphere into eastern and western hemispheres. Celestial objects observed along this colure have a celestial longitude of 90 degrees or 270 degrees.
On the other hand, the celestial equator colure, commonly known as the east-west colure, is the circle formed by the intersection of the celestial sphere with the plane perpendicular to the earth's equator. It passes through the vernal and autumnal equinoxes and divides the celestial sphere into northern and southern hemispheres. Celestial objects observed along this colure have a celestial latitude of 0 degrees.
Colures play a crucial role in celestial navigation because they serve as reference points for determining celestial coordinates and positions of stars, planets, and other celestial bodies. Moreover, they aid in understanding the movement and orientation of objects in the sky relative to an observer's position on Earth.

Etymology of COLURE
The word "colure" is derived from the Latin word "colūra", which itself comes from the Greek word "kólyra". In Greek astronomy, "kólyra" referred to the celestial circles or meridians that intersected the celestial equator at the solstices. The word has been adapted into English to describe imaginary celestial circles that intersect the ecliptic at the solstices and equinoxes, dividing the celestial sphere into quadrants.
