The term "cirrhotic" refers to the scarring and irreversible damage of the liver, which can lead to various complications throughout the body, including the kidneys.
In cirrhosis, the liver loses its ability to function properly and perform its vital roles, such as filtering toxins, producing essential proteins, and regulating blood flow. As a consequence, changes occur in the kidneys, known as cirrhotic kidney. These changes can include inflammation, fibrosis (excessive formation of scar tissue), and alterations in the blood vessels supplying the kidneys.
The presence of cirrhotic kidney can lead to impaired kidney function, decreased urine production, and retention of waste products in the body. Additionally, the damaged kidneys may become more susceptible to infections, further complicating the condition.
Patients with cirrhotic kidney may experience symptoms like decreased urine output, swelling in the legs, abdomen, or face, fatigue, and signs of liver dysfunction. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, blood tests to assess liver function and kidney damage, imaging studies such as ultrasound or CT scan, and sometimes a kidney biopsy.
Treatment for cirrhotic kidney focuses on managing the underlying liver disease, as improving liver function can sometimes help to stabilize or even reverse kidney damage. This may involve lifestyle modifications, medications, and in severe cases, liver transplantation. Additionally, measures to relieve complications such as fluid retention or electrolyte imbalances may be necessary.
