Chinese layering is a horticultural technique used to propagate plants by means of stem cuttings. It is a form of asexual propagation that allows gardeners and horticulturists to produce new plants that are genetically identical to the parent plant.
The process of Chinese layering involves bending a flexible stem of a plant downward and burying a portion of it in the soil, while keeping a section of the stem exposed above the ground. The exposed portion of the stem is typically wounded or girdled to encourage root formation. Once the stem is buried and secured in the soil, it is covered with a layer of soil or mulch, creating a mound-like structure.
Over time, roots will begin to develop from the wounded or girdled area of the stem, growing into the soil beneath the mound. These newly formed roots provide the young plant with the necessary nutrients and water to survive independently. Eventually, the rooted section of the stem can be separated from the parent plant and transplanted into its own container or garden bed, where it will continue to grow as a standalone plant.
Chinese layering is often favored for its simplicity and high success rate in propagating a wide range of plant species, including shrubs, trees, and vine-like plants.
