"Chikmagalur" is a combination of two Kannada words: "Chikkam" and "Gallu". "Chikkam" means "younger" or "smaller", and "Gallu" means "stone" or "rock". The name "Chikmagalur" is believed to refer to the younger daughter of Rukmangada, a local chief who ruled the region during ancient times. According to legend, Rukmangada had two daughters, one of whom had an illness caused by a curse. To cure her, an idol of Lord Shiva (a Hindu deity) was said to have been erected by saints on a bed of stones in the area.
