Catharacta is a genus of large seabirds that belong to the family of birds called Alcidae. This avian genus comprises two prominent species, the South Polar Skua (Catharacta maccormicki) and the Brown Skua (Catharacta antarctica). Catharacta birds are primarily found in the Southern Hemisphere, inhabiting regions such as Antarctica, the subantarctic islands, and the southern parts of Australia, South America, and Africa.
These skua species are known for their powerful build, with a length ranging from 55 to 70 centimeters, and a wingspan reaching up to 128 centimeters. Catharacta birds have striking dark plumage, often exhibiting shades of brown, black, and gray. They have sharp, hooked beaks and powerful, talon-like claws, which they use to snatch their prey from both the sea and land.
Catharacta birds are opportunistic predators, relying on a diverse diet that includes fish, seabirds, small mammals, and carrion. They are known for their aggressive behavior, often attacking and stealing food from other birds, including penguins and albatrosses. These skua species are highly adapted to their harsh and unpredictable environments, capable of enduring extreme weather conditions and flying long distances in search of food and suitable breeding grounds.
Although Catharacta birds are not currently considered endangered, they face some threats due to habitat degradation, climate change, and an increase in human activities in their territories.
