The "carnauba palm," scientifically known as Copernicia prunifera, is a tall palm tree native to northeastern Brazil, specifically the states of Ceará, Piauí, and Rio Grande do Norte. It is renowned for its unique and valuable wax, the "carnauba wax," which is derived from its leaves.
The carnauba palm typically reaches a height of 10 to 15 meters (33 to 49 feet) and has large, fan-shaped leaves that can span up to 2 meters (6.5 feet) in diameter. The tree thrives in arid and semi-arid environments, with hot temperatures and low annual rainfall. It is exceptionally resilient, with a deep root system that enables it to withstand droughts and extreme weather conditions.
The primary utility of the carnauba palm lies in the production of carnauba wax, which is widely used in various industries. The wax is obtained by collecting the leaves and extracting the wax through several processes, including drying, pulverizing, and clarification. Carnauba wax possesses numerous beneficial properties, such as a high melting point, excellent gloss, and water repellency. Consequently, it is utilized in the production of cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food products, household goods, and even in the automobile industry.
Due to its economic significance, the carnauba palm is cultivated in other countries with similar climates, such as the Dominican Republic, Colombia, and Bolivia.
