Bulk mantle refers to the main layer of the Earth's mantle, which is located between the crust and the core. It is the largest and thickest layer of the planet's interior, comprising approximately 84% of its volume. The bulk mantle is mainly composed of solid rock, mainly silicate minerals such as olivine and pyroxene.
This layer of the Earth extends from a depth of about 40 kilometers to approximately 2,900 kilometers below the Earth's surface. It is characterized by immense heat and pressure, causing the rock materials to be in a solid state, but with some capacity for flow over long periods of time, known as plastic deformation. The bulk mantle plays a crucial role in Earth's geodynamics, as its convective motion drives tectonic plate movement and contributes to the generation of volcanic activities.
The bulk mantle exhibits several subdivisions based on variations in mineral composition and physical properties, such as the upper mantle, asthenosphere, and lower mantle. The uppermost portion of the bulk mantle, known as the lithospheric mantle, is rigid and forms the Earth's tectonic plates, while the asthenosphere beneath it is more ductile and capable of flow. At greater depths, in the lower mantle, the pressure and temperature increase exponentially, resulting in changes in the mineral structure and properties.
