Browns test is a medical diagnostic procedure used to assess the integrity of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the knee joint. This test is named after its developer, Dr. William H. Brown, an orthopedic surgeon, who devised the technique in the 1970s.
During a Browns test, the patient lies supine on an examination table with the knee joint in approximately 20 to 30 degrees of flexion. The examiner then grasps the patient's lower leg with one hand and places the other hand on the patient's thigh, just above the knee. The examiner stabilizes the femur with the hand on the thigh while simultaneously rotating the lower leg internally and externally with the other hand.
The objective of the Browns test is to assess the stability and integrity of the ACL. Specifically, the test evaluates the presence of any excessive anterior translation (forward movement) of the tibia in relation to the femur during internal and external rotation of the leg. If the ACL is intact, the movement of the tibia should be limited, indicating a stable knee joint.
