Bradycinesia is a medical term used in the field of neurology to describe a characteristic symptom of certain movement disorders, particularly Parkinson's disease. Also referred to as bradykinesia, it refers to a reduction in the speed and fluidity of voluntary movements.
In individuals with bradycinesia, initiation and execution of movements become slow, resulting in a pronounced delay in response time. Simple tasks that were once automatic, such as walking, talking, or writing, require increased effort and time to complete. This slowness of movement often leads to a loss of fine motor control, causing difficulties in performing intricate movements like buttoning a shirt or manipulating small objects.
Apart from slower physical movement, bradycinesia may also manifest as a reduced amplitude or range of motion. Movements may appear stiff and lacking in normal fluidity. Patients may experience rigidity, muscle stiffness, and resistance to passive movement, contributing to a general sense of sluggishness and limited mobility.
Bradycinesia is believed to arise due to a disruption in the normal functioning of the basal ganglia, a part of the brain responsible for controlling movement. The reduction in dopamine, a neurotransmitter involved in the regulation of movement, is thought to play a fundamental role in the development of bradycinesia.
Treatment for bradycinesia may involve medication to restore dopamine levels in the brain, physical therapy to improve range of motion and muscle strength, as well as occupational therapy to enhance the performance of daily tasks.
