A bottlenose whale, scientifically known as Tursiops truncatus, is a species of toothed whale belonging to the family Delphinidae. This cetacean is characterized by its distinctively bulbous forehead, known as a "melon," which is used for echolocation. It has a robust body, reaching an average length of 4-6 meters and weighing up to 3,000 kilograms.
Bottlenose whales typically inhabit deep oceanic waters, preferring temperate and subarctic regions within the Northern Hemisphere. They are known to be highly social animals, often found in large groups called pods, which can consist of several hundred individuals. These groups exhibit intricate social structures, with individuals forming strong bonds and displaying cooperative behaviors.
Feeding primarily on squid and fish, bottle-nosed whales employ echolocation to locate their prey. Emitting high-frequency clicks from their nasal passages, they listen for the echoes generated by bouncing off objects.
