Borderline Leprosy, also known as Borderline Tuberculoid Leprosy, is a classification of leprosy, a chronic infectious disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae. This form of leprosy is one of the intermediate spectrums of the disease, lying between the more severe lepromatous leprosy and the milder tuberculoid leprosy.
Borderline leprosy is characterized by moderate skin lesions and the involvement of both the skin and peripheral nerves. The disease presents with asymmetrical skin patches that vary in size, color, and sensation. The affected areas may exhibit hair loss, reduced sweating, and numbness. In some cases, nerve damage can lead to muscle weakness and sensory loss.
Furthermore, borderline leprosy affects the immune system, resulting in the production of a moderate immune response against the leprosy bacteria. This immune response produces granulomas, which are collections of immune cells that form in an attempt to control the spread of the bacteria.
If left untreated, borderline leprosy may progress to more severe forms of the disease. However, with early diagnosis and appropriate multidrug therapy, the progression of the disease can be halted, and the individual can achieve a complete cure.
