A blastomere is a term used in embryology to refer to the individual cells that make up the early embryo during the process of cleavage. Cleavage is the rapid division of a fertilized egg into smaller cells, resulting in the formation of blastomeres. These cells are typically undifferentiated and have the potential to give rise to various specialized cell types in the developing organism.
Blastomeres originate from the zygote, which is the fertilized egg resulting from the fusion of sperm and egg. During cleavage, the zygote undergoes multiple rounds of cell division, resulting in the formation of a solid mass of blastomeres called a morula. As cleavage progresses, the morula undergoes further division and compaction, ultimately forming a hollow ball-like structure called a blastocyst. The blastocyst consists of an outer layer of cells, known as the trophectoderm, and an inner cell mass which will give rise to the actual embryo.
The number of blastomeres in an embryo increases with each round of cell division during cleavage. Blastomeres are generally totipotent, meaning they have the ability to develop into any cell type in the organism. This characteristic allows the blastomeres to contribute to the development of various tissues and organs, ultimately leading to the formation of a complete, functioning organism.
