The Australian pygmy goose, scientifically known as Nettapus pulchellus, is a small species of waterfowl native to Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands. It belongs to the family Anatidae, which includes ducks, geese, and swans.
The Australian pygmy goose is one of the smallest waterfowl species, measuring around 26 to 34 centimeters (10 to 13 inches) in length and weighing approximately 160 to 240 grams (5.6 to 8.4 ounces). It has a distinctive appearance with its dark brown plumage, white facial markings, and contrasting white wing patches. The male and female are quite similar in appearance, although the male tends to have a more pronounced white facial patch and a slightly larger size.
This species is primarily found in freshwater wetlands, lakes, and swamps with dense vegetation, often near open woodland or grasslands. It is a highly adaptable bird, capable of using various types of habitats, including man-made bodies of water such as rice paddies and farm dams. Australian pygmy geese are typically herbivorous, feeding on aquatic vegetation, seeds, grasses, and occasionally insects.
These geese are known for their monogamous breeding behavior. The female constructs a nest in dense vegetation near the water's edge, using plant material and lined with feathers. Clutches typically consist of 7 to 10 eggs, which are incubated by the female for around 25 to 28 days.
