The anterior temporal artery, also known as arteria temporalis anterior, is a blood vessel that is a branch of the external carotid artery. It is located on the side of the head, specifically in the temporal region.
The artery runs anteriorly, or forward, across the temple area, hence the term "temporal". It plays a crucial role in supplying blood to various structures in the head, including the scalp, pericranium (the outermost layer of the skull), and certain muscles around the eye region.
The anterior temporal artery is responsible for delivering oxygenated blood, nutrients, and other essential substances to its target areas. Additionally, it aids in the removal of waste products, such as carbon dioxide and metabolic byproducts, from the tissues it serves.
The distribution of the anterior temporal artery extends to the frontal, parietal, and temporal regions of the scalp, as well as the forehead, side of the head, and upper part of the ear. It anastomoses, or connects, with other arteries in the area, forming networks that ensure adequate blood supply throughout the head and face.
Any disruption or impairment of the blood flow through the anterior temporal artery can have detrimental effects on the structures it supplies, leading to conditions such as ischemia (lack of blood supply), tissue necrosis, or other related vascular disorders.
