The term "African water deerlet" refers to a small, deer-like mammal native to certain regions of Africa. Scientifically known as Hydropotes inermis, it belongs to the family Cervidae, which encompasses true deer species. The African water deerlet gets its name due to its preference for living near water bodies, such as rivers, swamps, and marshes.
Physically, this species is characterized by its compact size, with adults typically measuring between 70 to 80 centimeters in length and weighing approximately 9 to 14 kilograms. They have a slender body with short legs and a short tail. Unlike most deer species, the African water deerlet lacks antlers; instead, the males develop elongated canine teeth, commonly referred to as tusks, which protrude downwards from the upper jaw.
In terms of appearance, their fur is typically reddish-brown, blending well with their natural habitat. This provides the species with effective camouflage against predators. Furthermore, the African water deerlet has well-developed auditory and olfactory senses, aiding them in detecting potential threats and foraging for their preferred diet of aquatic vegetation, water plants, and grasses.
