Zoroastrianism is a monotheistic religion that originated in ancient Persia (modern-day Iran) during the 6th century BCE. It was founded by Zoroaster (also known as Zarathustra) and is considered one of the oldest known organized religions in the world.
At its core, Zoroastrianism revolves around the teachings and beliefs of Zoroaster, who proclaimed Ahura Mazda as the supreme deity. Ahura Mazda is seen as the creator of the universe, the embodiment of truth, righteousness, and purity. Zoroastrianism promotes the idea of ethical dualism, in which individuals are presented with the choice between good and evil, and are expected to actively choose good.
This religion highlights the significance of personal responsibility, moral righteousness, and the pursuit of good thoughts, good words, and good deeds. Zoroastrians strive to maintain balance and harmony within themselves and with the environment. They also practice rituals and ceremonies, such as prayer, purification rites, and fire worship.
Zoroastrians view life as a temporary journey that prepares the soul for the afterlife. They believe in the notion of judgment after death, where the soul is evaluated based on its deeds in life. Prominent concepts within Zoroastrianism include the battle between good and evil, the notion of heaven and hell, and the cycle of reincarnation.
Although Zoroastrianism was once highly influential, it faced persecution and decline in the face of Islamic conquests in the 7th century CE. Nonetheless, Zoroastrianism continues to be practiced by a small number of followers, primarily concentrated in India, Iran, and the diaspora.
