ZDV stands for Zidovudine, which is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) used in the management and treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. Zidovudine was the first antiretroviral drug to be approved for the treatment of HIV/AIDS.
ZDV works by inhibiting the activity of the reverse transcriptase enzyme, which is responsible for the replication of the viral genetic material (RNA) into DNA within infected cells. By blocking this enzyme, ZDV prevents the virus from multiplying and spreading throughout the body.
Typically administered orally in the form of tablets or syrup, ZDV is often used in combination with other antiretroviral drugs as part of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). This multidrug approach helps to suppress viral replication effectively and slow down the progression of HIV infection.
Common side effects of ZDV include nausea, vomiting, headache, fatigue, and anemia. Rare but serious side effects include severe allergic reactions, liver problems, and lactic acidosis (buildup of lactic acid in the blood). Monitoring blood counts and liver function is often recommended during the course of ZDV treatment.
