These structures consist of a collapsible wooden framework, usually made from lattice walls and roof poles. The lattice walls are covered with a waterproof and durable fabric, typically felt or canvas, which is then secured by ropes or straps. This covering helps to insulate against cold weather and provides protection against wind and precipitation.
Yurts are designed to be easily assembled and disassembled, making them highly portable and suitable for a nomadic lifestyle. Their circular shape allows for excellent stability and efficient use of space. They are often adorned with decorative linings and colorful patterns, reflecting the cultural heritage of the communities that utilize them.
Inside a yurt, the central space is generally used for various activities, such as cooking, eating, sleeping, and socializing. A central opening, known as a "toono" or "shanyrak," allows for ventilation and the escape of smoke from a central hearth or stove.
In modern times, yurts have gained popularity as alternative housing options, recreational spaces, and eco-friendly accommodations. They offer a unique and inviting atmosphere, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. Yurts have also become popular for glamping (glamorous camping), providing an upscale and comfortable camping experience.
