YDS is an acronym that stands for "Yosemite Decimal System." It is a grading system widely used in North America to rate the difficulty of outdoor activities such as rock climbing, mountaineering, and hiking. The YDS was developed in the 1950s by a group of climbers led by Glen Dawson and members of the Sierra Club in Yosemite National Park.
The YDS scale ranges from Class 1 to Class 5, with each class further divided into multiple levels. Class 1 denotes easy terrain that does not require any technical skills, such as walking on a flat trail. Class 5 involves technical climbing on rock faces and requires particular equipment and skills. Within Class 5, difficulty is further divided into decimal subdivisions, ranging from 5.0 (easiest) to 5.15 (most difficult).
