XRTT, short for eXtended Rate Transmission Technology, is a wireless communication technology that was developed as an enhancement to the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) standard. It falls under the third generation (3G) category of cellular networks, offering improved data transmission capabilities.
XRTT employs a CDMA-based air interface to provide high-speed data services over mobile networks. With its introduction, XRTT aimed to enable faster and more efficient data transfers compared to its predecessor technologies. It brought considerable improvements to data rates, capacity, and overall performance.
This technology operates in the 800 MHz frequency band, utilizing the spread spectrum technique to increase transmission capacity and minimize interference. XRTT offers peak data rates of up to 144 kilobits per second (Kbps) for downloads and 56 Kbps for uploads, which represented a significant jump from the speeds attainable with earlier CDMA technologies.
By leveraging XRTT, users can access various data services such as internet browsing, email, multimedia messaging, and file transfers on their mobile devices. It also supports real-time applications like video calling and video streaming with acceptable quality.
Although XRTT has been superseded by more advanced wireless technologies like EV-DO (Evolution-Data Optimized) and 4G LTE (Long-Term Evolution), it played a crucial role in the evolution of cellular networks, bridging the gap between 2G and high-speed 3G technologies.
