Xenons, or more specifically "xenon gas," refers to an element found in the periodic table with the atomic number 54 and symbol Xe. It is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless noble gas that is characterized by its low reactivity and inert nature. Xenon, like other noble gases, is part of Group 18 and is located in the rightmost column of the periodic table. It is considered to be the heaviest stable noble gas.
Xenon has various uses and applications due to its unique properties. It is often employed in specialized lighting systems, such as xenon flash lamps and high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps, where it produces a bright and powerful light. Additionally, xenon is used in medical imaging technologies, such as X-ray computed tomography (CT) and certain surgical procedures, enhancing the visibility of images. It also finds applications in ion propulsion systems for spacecraft and as a component of laser amplifiers in research and scientific experiments.
In terms of natural occurrence, xenon is present in trace amounts within the Earth's atmosphere, estimated at about one part per 20 million by volume. It is obtained through a process of fractional distillation of air, primarily during the production of liquid oxygen and liquid nitrogen. Xenon is considered a rare gas due to its limited availability, and its extraction and purification can be relatively expensive.
