The Wrisberg nerve, also known as the nervus intermedius or the nerve of Wrisberg, is a branch of the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII) that innervates certain areas of the face and head. Specifically, it provides sensation to the skin of the external auditory meatus and the posterior part of the auricle, which is the outer ear. The nerve originates in the geniculate ganglion, which is located within the facial nerve.
The Wrisberg nerve is responsible for carrying parasympathetic fibers that control various functions in the head and face. It supplies the taste buds on the posterior two-thirds of the tongue through its branch called the chorda tympani nerve. This nerve also conveys secretomotor fibers that stimulate the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands, as well as the lacrimal gland responsible for producing tears.
The Wrisberg nerve is named after the German anatomist Ludwig Levin Jacobson Wrisberg, who first described it in the late 18th century. Understanding the anatomy and function of the Wrisberg nerve is crucial in diagnosing and treating certain conditions involving the facial nerve and its branches.
