William John Wills (1834 – 1861) was an English surveyor, explorer, and member of the ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition. He is best known for his role in the Australian inland exploration and his tragic death during the expedition.
Wills was born in Totnes, Devon, England, and received an education that fostered his interest in natural sciences and exploration. In 1852, he migrated to Australia and eventually became an accomplished surveyor. Wills joined the expedition led by Robert O'Hara Burke in 1860, aiming to cross the continent from south to north.
During the journey, Wills demonstrated his expertise in mapping and navigation, contributing significantly to the expedition's progress. Despite facing numerous challenges and an arduous trek through harsh conditions, the team reached the northernmost point of their journey. However, due to a series of unfortunate events, including the deaths of some members and the lack of critical supplies, Wills, along with Burke, were forced to make a desperate decision to return.
Tragically, both Wills and Burke perished during the return journey. Stranded and without sufficient provisions, their bodies were eventually discovered by a search party months after their demise.
