Wet plate refers to a photographic process that was widely used in the mid-19th century. Also known as wet collodion process, it involves creating photographs on glass or metal plates that have been coated with a thin layer of liquid collodion, which is a mixture of nitrocellulose, ether, and alcohol.
To produce a wet plate photograph, the plate is first sensitized by dipping it into a solution of silver nitrate, which forms a light-sensitive silver iodide compound on the collodion surface. The plate is then loaded into a camera and exposed while still wet, as the collodion needs to maintain its moisture for successful development.
After exposure, the plate is immediately developed by pouring a developer solution onto the plate, causing the latent image to become visible. The developed image is then fixed with a fixer solution, which removes the remaining silver halides and stabilizes the image. To further enhance the photograph's permanence and prevent deterioration, the plate is often rinsed, varnished, and dried.
The wet plate process enabled the creation of high-quality, detailed photographs with relatively short exposure times, ushering in a new era of photography. It was widely used for portraiture, landscapes, and documentary photography during the 1850s and 1860s until it was largely replaced by other processes that were more convenient and faster, such as dry plate and eventually film. However, wet plate photography still holds importance in contemporary art as a niche technique, appreciated for its unique aesthetic and historical significance.
