Weissite is a mineral that belongs to the oxide class of minerals and specifically falls under the group known as spinel. It is a relatively rare mineral and is characterized by its distinct physical and chemical properties. The mineral was first discovered in 1958 by Arthur Thomas and was named after Austrian mineralogist Frantisek Weiss, who made significant contributions to the field of mineralogy.
Weissite forms as small octahedral or cubic crystals which are typically brown or black in color. It has a Mohs hardness of around 7, indicating its relative hardness. The mineral is known to occur in association with other minerals such as chromite and magnetite in intrusive igneous rocks.
