The water chevrotain, scientifically known as Hyemoschus aquaticus, is a small, elusive, and semi-aquatic mammal native to the forests and wetlands of sub-Saharan Africa. Also commonly referred to as the water deer or fanged deer, this species belongs to the family Tragulidae within the order Artiodactyla.
Water chevrotains have a compact yet graceful body structure, with a rounded head, short legs, and a relatively long, thin neck. They typically measure between 45 and 55 centimeters in length, stand about 30 centimeters tall, and weigh around 7-10 kilograms. Characteristic features of the water chevrotain include large, protruding canine teeth in males, which are often visible even when the mouth is closed.
True to their name, water chevrotains are well-adapted to an aquatic lifestyle, dwelling in dense, swampy areas near freshwater sources. They are exceptional swimmers, aided by their slender limbs and hoof-like toes, which slightly spread to provide better traction on muddy terrain. These creatures have also developed an ability to stay submerged underwater for prolonged periods, enabling them to evade potential predators effectively.
Feeding primarily on vegetation, water chevrotains possess a unique browsing strategy, standing on their hind legs and using their elongated snout to reach leaves and shoots from low hanging branches. Their diet primarily consists of fruits, leaves, buds, and fallen nuts.
While water chevrotains are generally solitary creatures, they may form monogamous partnerships or small family groups. Females give birth to a single offspring after a gestation period of around six to nine months.
