Wally Schirra was an American astronaut who rose to prominence during the early years of NASA's space program. Born on March 12, 1923, in Hackensack, New Jersey, Schirra's full name was Walter Marty Schirra Jr. He is best known for being part of the original Mercury 7 astronauts, a group of seven men selected by NASA in 1959 to be the first Americans to journey into space.
Schirra made significant contributions to space exploration during his career. He flew three important space missions: Mercury-Atlas 8 (Sigma 7), Gemini 6A, and Apollo 7. His Mercury flight on October 3, 1962, made him the fifth American and ninth person to travel to space, circling the Earth for nine hours. Gemini 6A, in December 1965, became the first manned spacecraft rendezvous in orbit with Gemini 7. Lastly, Schirra commanded Apollo 7 in October 1968, which was the first manned mission of the Apollo program to reach Earth orbit.
Aside from his career as an astronaut, Schirra also served in the United States Navy as a pilot during World War II and the Korean War. He retired from NASA and the Navy as a Captain in 1969. Wally Schirra passed away on May 3, 2007, at the age of 84. His accomplishments as an astronaut and his contributions to space exploration solidify his legacy as one of the key figures in America's journey to the stars.
