A vole is a small, rodent-like mammal that belongs to the family Microtus and is typically found in grasslands, meadows, and marshes. They are also commonly known as meadow mice or field mice. Voles have a stout body with short legs, a short tail, and small eyes and ears. They are herbivorous animals and mainly consume grasses, seeds, roots, and tubers.
Voles are known for their burrowing habits, creating a complex network of tunnels and runways within their habitat. These burrows serve as shelter and protection from predators. They reproduce rapidly, with females having multiple litters each year, which contributes to their high population densities.
Although voles are similar in appearance to mice, they can be distinguished by their stockier build, shorter tails, and smaller eyes and ears. They are also primarily active during twilight hours (crepuscular), whereas mice are often nocturnal.
Voles play an important role in the ecosystem by serving as prey for various predators, including birds of prey, snakes, and carnivorous mammals. However, they can also be considered pests, causing damage to crops, gardens, and ornamental plants through their feeding habits. Control measures are sometimes necessary when their populations become too abundant, as they can negatively impact agricultural and horticultural practices.
