It is typically implanted under the skin, usually in the chest or arm area, and connects to a larger vein, such as the superior vena cava or a major artery.
The main purpose of a vascular access port is to eliminate the need for repeated needle sticks, reducing discomfort and the risk of complications associated with intravenous access. The port consists of a small chamber with a self-sealing silicone or septum-covered port that is accessed using a specialized needle or non-coring needle. This self-sealing mechanism allows healthcare professionals to inject fluids or withdraw blood without causing damage to the port.
Vascular access ports have several advantages over other intravenous access devices, such as peripheral IV lines. They are designed to be long-lasting and can remain in place for months or even years. This makes them suitable for individuals receiving long-term treatments, such as chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition, or hemodialysis. Ports also provide a more reliable and convenient access point, enabling patients to receive treatment at home rather than having to visit a medical facility.
