Vampyromorphida refers to an order of deep-sea, predatory squids known for their distinctive physical and behavioral characteristics. These cephalopods are found in the mesopelagic and bathypelagic zones of the world's oceans, typically dwelling at great depths ranging from 200 meters to over 1,000 meters.
Members of the Vampyromorphida order, colloquially known as vampire squids, possess several unique adaptations that enable them to survive in their dark, low-oxygen environments. They have a small, gelatinous body covered in a web-like cloak that extends between their eight arms, giving them a vampiric appearance. The cloak is studded with light-producing organs called photophores, which the squid employs to produce bioluminescent displays to attract mates or confuse predators.
Vampyromorphida squids are characterized by a series of long filaments extending from the arms, giving them a "cape-like" appearance. They also possess large, round eyes with bioluminescent properties that allow them to detect even the dimmest light in their deep-sea habitat.
