Urosynthase, also known as hydroxymethylbilane synthase or porphobilinogen deaminase, is an enzymatic protein involved in the biosynthesis of heme, a component of hemoglobin and other key molecules in the body. It plays a crucial role in the metabolic pathway known as heme synthesis, specifically in the conversion of porphobilinogen (PBG) to hydroxymethylbilane (HMB).
Urosynthase is encoded by the HMBS gene and is primarily found in the mitochondria of cells. This enzyme catalyzes the removal of an amino group from four PBG molecules, resulting in the formation of one HMB molecule. This reaction is an important step in the synthesis of heme, as HMB is subsequently converted into uroporphyrinogen III via a series of enzymatic reactions.
