Uric acid is a compound that is produced as a byproduct of the breakdown of purine in the body. It is a waste product that is formed when the liver breaks down purines, which are naturally occurring substances found in certain foods and also produced by the body. Uric acid is normally present in the blood and excreted through urine, but its levels can vary depending on various factors such as diet, genetics, and overall health.
In excess amounts, uric acid can accumulate and form crystals that can deposit in joints, leading to a condition known as gout, which is a form of arthritis. Gout is characterized by sudden and severe joint pain, inflammation, and swelling, commonly affecting the big toe, but can also affect other joints such as the ankles, knees, elbows, and wrists.
High levels of uric acid in the blood, a condition known as hyperuricemia, may also increase the risk of developing kidney stones, as uric acid can crystallize and form stones in the kidneys.
Monitoring and managing uric acid levels is important for individuals at risk or diagnosed with gout or kidney stones. This can be achieved through lifestyle modifications such as avoiding foods high in purines, maintaining a healthy weight, staying hydrated, and in some cases, taking medication to reduce uric acid production or increase its excretion.
