The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) responsible for combating illegal drugs, organized crime, and terrorism on a global scale. It was established in 1997 through a merger of the United Nations Drug Control Programme (UNDCP) and the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Division (CPCJ) of the UN Office at Vienna (UNOV).
UNODC plays a crucial role in promoting international cooperation to combat drug trafficking and drug abuse. Its primary objectives include strengthening legal frameworks and institutions, assisting member states in developing effective drug control policies, providing technical assistance for drug-related criminal justice and law enforcement efforts, and promoting prevention and treatment programs.
In addition to addressing drug-related issues, UNODC also focuses on combating transnational organized crime, such as human trafficking, smuggling of migrants, corruption, and money laundering. It provides technical expertise and support to member states to enhance their capacity in investigating, prosecuting, and preventing these crimes.
Furthermore, UNODC aims to prevent and respond to the global threat of terrorism. It assists member states in implementing measures to counter terrorism, including strengthening legal frameworks, capacity building, promoting international cooperation, and supporting the development and implementation of counter-terrorism strategies.
By working closely with governments, international organizations, civil society, and other stakeholders, UNODC strives to foster a balanced and integrated approach in addressing the multifaceted challenges of drugs, crime, and terrorism within the framework of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.
