UNMIBH, or the United Nations Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNMIBH), was a peacekeeping mission established by the United Nations Security Council in 1995. This mission was deployed to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) with the primary aim of assisting in the implementation of the Dayton Peace Agreement, which ended the armed conflict in the region.
UNMIBH was responsible for a variety of tasks to support the peace process in BiH. Firstly, it played a crucial role in the promotion of a stable and secure environment, helping to rebuild the local law enforcement and judiciary, and facilitating the return of refugees and internally displaced persons.
Additionally, UNMIBH had a role in monitoring and promoting respect for human rights, promoting the rule of law, and supporting the reform of the BiH police forces. It also provided technical assistance and advice to local authorities in various fields, such as electoral processes, democratization, and economic reconstruction.
The mission consisted of a multinational force comprising military, civilian police officers, and civilian personnel. These international personnel worked alongside local authorities, institutions, and organizations to foster a peaceful and multiethnic society in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
UNMIBH was active from 1995 to 2002 when it was succeeded by the European Union Police Mission and the European Union Special Representative. Its overall aim was to contribute to the establishment of a stable, democratic, and prosperous Bosnia and Herzegovina, and to support the country in its post-conflict transformation and reintegration into the international community.
