Etymology of ULTIMATE FRISBEE
The word "Ultimate Frisbee" has a relatively straightforward etymology. The term "Frisbee" comes from the Wham-O toy company, which first introduced a flying disc, named the "Frisbee", in the late 1950s. The name was coined due to the popularity of the Frisbie Pie Company in Connecticut, whose empty pie tins were often used as flying discs by college students.
The addition of the word "Ultimate" to "Frisbee" is credited to Jared Kass, a student at Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey, in the late 1960s. Kass and some friends adapted a game called "Guts" to be played with a Frisbee. They modified the rules and gameplay, and to differentiate it from other Frisbee games, they decided to call it "Ultimate Frisbee".
