UBD stands for Understanding by Design. It is an educational framework or approach developed by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe in the late 1990s. UBD is a backward design method that focuses on designing curriculum or instructional units by determining the desired learning outcomes first and then planning the activities and assessments that will lead to those outcomes.
At its core, UBD is an approach that encourages educators to think deeply about the goals they have for their students and what they want them to understand at the end of a unit or course. The process involves identifying the essential questions that will guide the learning, determining what knowledge or skills are most important for students to grasp, and designing assessments that will measure their understanding.
The UBD framework consists of three main stages: 1) Identifying desired results, 2) Determining acceptable evidence, and 3) Planning learning experiences and instruction. In the first stage, educators clarify the desired learning outcomes and establish what students should know, understand, and be able to do. In the second stage, they devise appropriate assessments to measure students’ understanding and proficiency. Finally, in the third stage, educators create engaging learning experiences and instructional plans that will promote students' achievement of the desired outcomes.
The UBD approach aims to shift the focus from covering content to achieving meaningful understanding. By starting with the end goal in mind, educators can design more effective and engaging learning experiences that lead to deeper learning and authentic understanding for students.
