Type B Hemophilus influenzae Meningitis (HiB Meningitis) is a serious bacterial infection that primarily affects the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It is caused by the Gram-negative bacteria Haemophilus influenzae type b (HiB) and is characterized by severe inflammation of the meninges, the protective layers surrounding the central nervous system.
HiB Meningitis is predominantly seen in infants and young children, particularly those under the age of five who have not been immunized against this bacteria. The infection can be transmitted through respiratory droplets or direct contact with respiratory secretions of an infected person.
Symptoms of HiB Meningitis may include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, vomiting, confusion, irritability, and sensitivity to light.
