Trofim Denisovich Lysenko was a Soviet biologist and agronomist who gained prominence during the mid-20th century. Born in 1898 in what is now Ukraine, Lysenko espoused a pseudo-scientific theory known as Lysenkoism, which became the official doctrine of biology in the Soviet Union in the 1930s under the Stalinist regime.
Lysenkoism rejected classical genetics and Mendelian inheritance in favor of Lamarckian principles, which posited that acquired traits acquired during an organism's lifetime could be passed on to future generations.
