Tristenna follows a modified structure with three tercets and a final quatrain, although the overall pattern and feel of the villanelle are still maintained.

The first line of the opening tercet is repeated as the last line of the remaining tercets, while the second line of the opening tercet is repeated as the penultimate line of the remaining tercets.
