Total Knee Replacements, also known as total knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure performed to treat severe knee joint damage or deterioration caused by age-related wear and tear, arthritis, fractures, or other medical conditions. It involves the replacement of the damaged knee joint with a prosthetic implant in order to restore functionality, alleviate pain, and improve the patient's quality of life.
During a total knee replacement, the surgeon removes the damaged cartilage and bone from the ends of the femur (thigh bone), tibia (shin bone), and occasionally the patella (kneecap), and replaces them with artificial components made of metal alloys, high-density plastics, or ceramic materials. This results in a prosthetic joint that closely mimics the natural movement and function of a healthy knee joint.
The surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia, and the patient is closely monitored throughout the procedure. Total knee replacements can offer significant relief for individuals experiencing chronic knee pain, limited mobility, or deformity, and can greatly improve their ability to perform daily activities such as walking, standing, and climbing stairs.
Post-surgery, patients typically undergo a rehabilitation program that includes physical therapy to aid in strengthening the muscles surrounding the knee and regain flexibility and mobility.
