Togavirus infection is a medical term used to describe an infection caused by the Togaviridae family of viruses, which belong to the order of viruses called Nidovirales. Togaviruses are a group of enveloped viruses that have a single-stranded RNA genome. These viruses commonly infect animals, including vertebrates and arthropods, and can occasionally cause illness in humans.
In humans, Togavirus infections can manifest as different diseases, with symptoms varying depending on the specific virus involved. One of the most well-known Togaviruses is the Rubella virus, which causes the infectious disease commonly known as German measles or Rubella. Rubella infection is characterized by a skin rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and generally mild symptoms, typically resolving within a week.

For example, the Chikungunya virus, transmitted by mosquitoes, primarily causes an acute febrile illness in humans, characterized by high fever, joint pain, headache, muscle pain, and rash. While Chikungunya is not usually fatal, joint pain can be long-lasting or even chronic in certain cases.

Preventing Togavirus infections often involves the use of vaccines (like the MMR vaccine for Rubella) and preventive measures, such as mosquito control methods in the case of diseases like Chikungunya.
