These moths are commonly known as webbing clothes moths due to their destructive behavior and preference for feeding on natural fibers found in clothing, carpets, and home furnishings. The genus Tineola includes two primary species, Tineola bisselliella and Tineola pellionella, both of which are closely related and exhibit similar habits.
Tineola moths are typically around 6 to 7 millimeters in length and have a wingspan of approximately 9 to 16 millimeters. They often have a golden or buff-colored wing coloration, marked with faint spots or streaks. These moths prefer dark and undisturbed areas, such as closets, attics, and storage spaces, where they lay their eggs. The larvae that hatch from the eggs are the most destructive stage of the moth's lifecycle. They feed on natural fibers, particularly wool, silk, fur, and feathers, causing damage to clothing, upholstery, and other textiles.
