Etymology of TEETOTALISM
The word "teetotalism" originated from the temperance movement in the 19th century. It is believed to have been coined by Richard Turner in Preston, England, during a meeting of the Preston Temperance Society in 1833. The story goes that Turner used a red-hot iron to emphasize the abstinence principle, writing "T-Total" (total abstinence) on the wall of a chalkboard.
