Etymology of TEDDY BEAR
The word "teddy bear" has an interesting etymology. It originated from an incident involving former U.S. President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt. In November 1902, President Roosevelt went on a hunting trip in Mississippi, where he was notorious for his love of hunting. During the expedition, a group of hunters caught a bear and tied it to a tree, essentially setting it up for the president to shoot.
However, when Roosevelt saw the helpless bear, he refused to shoot it, deeming it unsportsmanlike. The incident caught the attention of Clifford Berryman, a cartoonist for The Washington Post, who illustrated a political caricature depicting the president's act of mercy towards the bear.
Inspired by this cartoon, a candy shop owner named Morris Michtom created a stuffed bear toy, which he called the "Teddy's Bear".
