Tawny port is a type of fortified wine that originated in the Douro Valley of Portugal. It is made from a blend of red grape varieties, primarily Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and Tinto Cão.
The term "tawny" refers to the amber or reddish-brown color that this port wine acquires during aging. Unlike the deeper red color of ruby port, tawny port undergoes an oxidative aging process, which exposes it to air and results in the gradual oxidation of the wine. This aging process imparts distinct flavors and characteristics to tawny port, including nutty, dried fruit, and caramel notes.
Tawny port is typically aged in wooden barrels for an extended period, often spanning several decades, allowing the wine to mellow and develop complexity.
