Tawheed, also spelled Tawhid, is an Islamic theological concept that refers to the absolute oneness and indivisibility of God. Derived from the Arabic word for "unity" or "oneness," it represents the central doctrine of Islamic monotheism. Tawheed asserts that there is only one God who is eternal, self-sufficient, and has no partners, associates, or equals.
In Islamic theology, Tawheed is divided into three distinct categories: Tawheed al-Rububiyyah, Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah, and Tawheed al-Asma' wa al-Sifat.
Tawheed al-Rububiyyah refers to the Oneness of God in His divine actions and lordship. It affirms that God is the sole creator, sustainer, and administrator of the universe.
Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah, also known as Tawheed al-Ibadah, relates to the exclusive worship and devotion that should be offered to God alone. It emphasizes the prohibition of associating any partners or intermediaries with God in acts of worship.
Tawheed al-Asma' wa al-Sifat asserts the belief in God's unique and perfect attributes. It emphasizes that God possesses the most beautiful and highest qualities, beyond human understanding and comparison.
Tawheed is considered the foundation of Islamic faith, and Muslims are expected to embody this belief in every aspect of their lives. Upholding Tawheed is seen as crucial for spiritual growth, attaining salvation, and developing a strong relationship with God.
Etymology of TAWHEED
The word "tawheed" is derived from the Arabic root word "wahada", which means "to make one" or "to unify".
